Kinds of internships: We are looking for people with developed ability to organize and manage, as well as a high level of comfort teaching a variety of subjects. These skills would be applied by bringing organization and delivering training to our core of volunteers who teach our "Getting Started" classes each Wednesday night. The intern would be expected to teach one or two of these classes themselves.
The intern would also be responsible for the organization of the general volunteer core, including volunteer orientation, placement and follow-up.
There is the possibility for the intern to explore potential speaking engagements with churches and generally audit the spiritual temperature of this ministry.
Desirable skills: Written competence and good articulation. Ability to create reports from data and Excel spreadsheets. Bilingual in Spanish or French an asset.
Must be able to work with and among different cultures and have the ability to mediate conflict between cultures.
Ability to develop a bond of trust with the "client" but maintain professional distance.
Must be willing to try new things, meet new people, listen and empathyze.
An intern must submit and pass a criminal background check.
Number of internships: One Location of internships: Hamilton, ON. Duration of internships: One year. Costs: Micah House will cover all travel expenses (including mileage) and office expenses. If the student chooses to relocate to Hamilton they would have to cover their accommodation.
Insurance: No. Our insurance covers the intern position. Medical coverage: Yes we do. Ask for details. Training: We do not have a specific training program beyond a basic, but thorough, orientation. However, all of our previous interns have learned quickly through their hands-on engagement. The intern must be prepared to engage quickly upon their arrival. It is often a fast-paced environment and they need to be able to learn on their feet and have the capacity to retain knowledge of the system.
Evaluation: Yes. Volunteering: Yes. There are always volunteer opportunities available at Micah House. Meal preparation, translation, assisting guests by travelling with them to appointments, administration, and organization are some of them.
