Gospel of Mark (WYB3655HF)
This course offers opportunity to read the entire Gospel of Mark communally. The class will provide space for historical questions – what might Mark’s community have been like, what challenges might they have been facing, what might Mark’s purpose have been in writing his narrative of Jesus’ life. It will also offer an occasion to ask literary questions – why did Mark end the gospel as he did, what is the significance of the way he interrupts one story with another. In the main, the class will address theological questions – who did Mark think that Jesus was and what did Mark think that God did through Jesus’ life, death and resurrection. The significance of Mark for today will also be a topic of discussion. Please note that there is a pre-assignment for this course which is due on the first day of class. Prerequisite: Introduction to NT. Reading, commentary writing, participation. This could be a Biblical elective. Schedule: April 21 - 25, 2014.
