Thursday July 12th, 2007
Wycliffe College, the evangelical and Anglican theological college in Toronto, is delighted to announce the appointment of the Rev Dr. Christopher Seitz to be the professor of Biblical interpretation, to commence January 1, 2008. Dr. Seitz has been for the past ten years the professor of Old Testament and theological studies at the University of St. Andrews’, and previously held a similar position at Yale University. He has written fifteen books, some of the most prominent of which are Zion’s Final Destiny, Figured Out, Word Without End, and Preaching and Teaching Isaiah. His most recent work is entitled Prophecy and Hermeneutics: toward a new introduction to the Prophets. He is also the editor of Studies in Theological Interpretation. An Anglican priest resident in the Diocese of Central Florida, he has been an articulate advocate for global communion through the Anglican Communion Institute, of which he is the president. On the occasion of his appointment, George Sumner, Wycliffe’s principal said “Chris Seitz is one of the foremost Old Testament scholars writing in English today, and we are excited to have him join the Wycliffe faculty. Like his teacher Brevard Childs, he has displayed historical critical expertise, but has gone on to put this at the disposal of a deep Scriptural and theological project. His writing also includes works useful to the pastor preparing a Sunday sermon as well as more popular theological works. He has a reputation as a great teacher and supervisor of students, whose theses have covered a wide range in the history of interpretation. At Wycliffe we look forward to Chris contributing in particular to our advanced degree program. We believe that his addition to our already strong and cohesive faculty will make Wycliffe a compelling place to do doctoral work.”
