Wycliffe College student, Dion Oxford, is in the running to receive an award given by Canadian Living magazine in its "Me to We Awards," under the category of Social Action. Dion, despite having been diagnosed with MS ten years ago, runs the Gateway hostel, sponsored by the Salvation Army, in downtown Toronto. Under his direction, Gateway Linens was recently opened in the basement of a building on Church St. near the headquarters of NOW magazine, and is now doing the towel-and-bedding laundry for most of the Salvation Army hostels in the city. Today’s Toronto Sun article on Dion mentions that “Men who find themselves temporarily homeless, and therefore bunking up at the Gateway hostel, are given the opportunity to work at the laundry and gain experience in the trade -- with Dion Oxford having already set up the opportunity for full-time unionized jobs in the private sector for those who pass muster.”
