On November 16, 2011 The Rev. Canon Dr. Reginald Stackhouse made an address in Founder's Chapel at the celebration of its 100th Anniversary. An excerpt from his address can be read below:
When we speak of the founders of Wycliffe College, we may conjure up a picture of men wearing full beards along with Prince Albert coats. But long before the feminist revolution, Wycliffe benefitted also from the leadership of women – sometimes in unpredictable ways.
In 1882, when our first building was erected on College Street, the construction committee was for ‘Men Only’, and that almost led to disaster. True, men collected enough money to build a handsome, new center of learning on a site almost where the School of Mines stands now. But those men forgot one thing. They had spent all the building fund when they realized they had not provided for furnishing this structure...
