First Wednesday Event; Knowing Christ through sport
Monday September 25th, 2006
Wednesday, 13 September 2006 marked the beginning of the
Wednesday Community Events once more at WycliffeCollege. Students and faculty
listened to Bob Johnston from Scripture Union Canada . Mr. Johnston has had a
hand in some amazing evangelism events. He retold how one church offered
services on Sundays at the pool, so parents could go to church while their
children were taking swimming lessons. Also, how one church rented some of its
land to the town of Waterloo for soccer fields, and in
turn had a large World Cup Party that mixed soccer and the message together,
and was a huge success.
What Mr. Johnston kept coming back to was the need for
churches to realize their strengths and gifts and to find out what the community around them needs. There are no pre-packaged
deals for a pastor to buy and simply implement. He and Scripture Union help to
decipher what is special about the church and what the needs of the community
are in order for the two to form a powerful bond. It’s about serving churches
to reach other people for Christ, and that is what Mr. Johnston loves about his
job—it’s not about him, or his ministry, it’s about serving the Church.
