Kate Smith
MTSD, 2013

While pursuing my undergraduate degree at the University of Toronto, I lived on the Wycliffe College residence floor. I always knew that I wanted to come back to study at Wycliffe someday, because of the College’s professors and community. I also loved that the community prayed together each day.

While working full-time as a high school teacher and parenting my own children, I began slowly working toward an MTS. During my studies, I also spent time in Zambia teaching English to seminarians. When I returned from Africa, I was told that Wycliffe now had an MTSD program. This fit me perfectly as I wanted to study, research, and reflect theologically on what I had learned while in Africa about enduring through suffering, and about the impact of Christian community on caring for the vulnerable.

After completing my MTSD, I worked as a lay Young Adults minister in the urban context of Toronto. As a family we then moved to Dallas, Texas, where I became the Director for the Uptown Dallas Fellows program. I relied on my MTSD training as our group partnered with various non-profits in the city and helped to support many urban ministries doing great work. As I mentored and supported college students, I drew upon what I had learned in my ministry courses at Wycliffe. I am currently in the ordination process in the Episcopal Diocese of Dallas, where I hope to continue serving the church and the world.
