Margaret's Legacy
For over 140 years, Wycliffe graduates, faculty, staff and friends have woven their unique gifts into the College’s fabric. For 35 of those years, I too have been a part of the Wycliffe community — as a student, a professor, as a member of the College’s Board of Trustees, and now as Principal. Wycliffe was and remains a good place to be.
You, our friends and alumni, are generous in your annual financial gifts. In fact, I regularly hear many of you say you wish you could do more for God’s mission here, in this place. Happily, there is a way each of us can make a special and lasting contribution to Wycliffe—a contribution that would benefit future students and Christ’s church for years to come. How? By remembering Wycliffe College with a gift in your estate plans.
Some time ago, I met with Margaret, a long time Wycliffe donor, who is active in our community and parent of a Wycliffe alumnus. Her comments are telling. For Margaret, “Wycliffe illuminates the mind as well as the soul. It prepares students to become the ‘Harvesters’ that Jesus talked about. Jesus described the field as ripe, but to reap the harvest we must have labourers who are fully equipped, whether it be for evangelism or academia. This is exactly the kind of training students receive at Wycliffe.”
It was Margaret’s father who instilled in her the value of an education. He said: “Education is something you can take with you anywhere in the world.” This wisdom has inspired Margaret and her family for years.
My conversation with Margaret reaffirmed my belief that Wycliffe College is needed now more than ever. We continue to face uncertain times in the church and in the world. It is essential that Wycliffe remain robust and able to prepare each student to carry the Word of hope and salvation to future generations. We must also continue to provide important opportunities such as bursaries for those who would not have access to our rich resources and services in any other way.
This is why I am asking you to please think about leaving a gift in your Will to Wycliffe College.
With a legacy gift, you will ensure Wycliffe has a reliable source of future funding. We will be able to keep tuition affordable and to continue to fund the essential educational services that Wycliffe provides its students and through them, Christ’s church and world.
Margaret has left a gift in her Will for Wycliffe. It was something she wanted to do. And she was clear when she said: “Go to Wycliffe. See for yourself the faculty’s amazing knowledge, the depth of their commitment to the Gospel. Then, do what you can. A gift of any amount in your estate plans will help students in the future. Small amounts can add up to make a significant difference.” Indeed they can, and with your help they will.
Thank you, Margaret, for your commitment to Wycliffe College. And thank you, our alumni and friends, for making your own legacy gift to Wycliffe College.
Rt Rev. Dr Stephen Andrews, Principal and Helliwell Professor of Biblical Interpretation
