Nina Schuurman-Drenth
MDiv, 2022 (expected)
I grew up in Hamilton, Ontario in the Christian Reformed Church. Together with my husband Dave, I have engaged in refugee care, street-level work and new monastic community ministry. While I have enjoyed four years of meaningful ministry in urban para-church settings, it is only recently that I am able to say that I'm ready for a pastoral position when God calls me into one, and I have Wycliffe to thank, in large part, for my readiness.
After taking a short time off post-undergrad, I knew I was still curious regarding theology, and that I wanted to explore it in an academic setting. After looking at a variety of options for schools, I landed on Wycliffe College as offering a great opportunity to get a biblically rooted education while also enjoying learning from diverse voices through Wycliffe’s connection to the Toronto School of Theology. I was likewise compelled by the beautiful architecture of the building and culturally rich downtown setting.
While at Wycliffe, I completed a pastoral placement at Eucharist Church (Hamilton). In 2021–22, I will be writing my thesis on a biblical theology of Sabbath and its implications for the modern ecological crisis with Dr. Sylvia Keesmaat (Trinity College).
Despite only coming to campus once or twice a week, I've made meaningful friendships at Wycliffe that have already and will continue to serve me well in my life of ministry. I've been extremely grateful to be a part of a community that supports me and has equipped me with theological tools as a young woman with a pastoral vocation.
