The course’s title is taken from Calvin’s subtitle for his Third Book of the Institutes, and the course offers a historical-theological approach to Soteriology. It will begin with a brief focus on the biblical and theological doctrines lying adjacent to this topic of receiving and perceiving grace, namely Atonement, Regeneration, Union with Christ, the Holy Spirit. This topic might have been called ‘theologies of the Holy Spirit’, except that this is both too wide a definition (there is more to the Holy Spirit than effecting salvation in believers) and too narrow (it is not just about ‘the Holy Spirit’, if one takes Philippians 2:12-13 seriously.) The story of the delineation of systematic categories has sometimes left this topic in a ‘nomansland’; however we will find good treatment of it from a number of different angles in these modern masters, at that point where doctrine and spirituality-ethics meet.
This course will be offered in a hybrid mode (LEC 3101) with some components being online and others requiring in-person participation.
