Convocation for the Class of 2023 will be held on Monday May 8th, 2023, in Sheraton Hall at Wycliffe College. The College will bestow an honorary Doctor of Divinity upon the Rt Rev. Matthias Der, a member of Wycliffe’s Class of 1990, who is now Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Hong Kong Island. Bishop Der will deliver the Convocation Address to the graduating class. Due to the large graduating class, seating is limited to their guests only; however, both the ceremony and Holy Eucharist will be livestreamed. Dr. Ann Jervis , Professor Emerita of New Testament at Wycliffe College, has recently completed her book, Paul and Time: Life in the Temporality of Christ . This work challenges standard interpretations of how Paul understood time that have assumed that the apostle inherited Jewish apocalyptic sequential two-age temporality. Dr. Jervis proposes instead that Paul conceived of time in terms of “life in this age” or “life in Christ”: that is, that humans apart from Christ live in this age, whereas believers live entirely in the temporality of Christ. After an international search, undertaken by a committee representing students, faculty, the Wycliffe Board, the Toronto School of Theology and the University of Toronto, we are pleased to announce the appointment of The Rev. Dr Boram Lee as Professor of Pastoral Care and Practice. The position was held by Professor Wanda Malcolm until her recent retirement. Dr Lee will take the lead in teaching the foundational Boundaries and Bridges and Advanced Formation and Pastoral Care courses, first designed and implemented by Dr Malcolm. Last week, January 16-20, the Relevant Series took place at various locations, including Wycliffe College, on the University of Toronto St. George campus. The goal of this annual event, organized by campus Christian organizations, is to "engage students in thoughtful discussions and be a launching point for important conversations." It was a warm gathering of colleagues, friends, and family members who assembled in the Wycliffe College refectory December 14, 2022 to celebrate its recently retired and about-to-retire faculty and senior staff. Those feted were Bishops Frederick and Heber Wilkinson Professor of Church History Alan Hayes, Professor Emeritus New Testament Ann Jervis, Professor of Pastoral Psychology Wanda Malcolm, and long time former Registrar Barbara Jenkins.
